Little Ukraine

Standard

A New Yorker never has to go far to visit a foreign country. Among the trendy restaurants and shops in East Village are some historical shops rich in Ukrainian culture. Veselka, 24-hour restaurant at the corner of 9th Street and Second Avenue, and Surma, a boutique shop on 6th Street, are businesses started by Ukrainian immigrants that lived in the area. Next to Surma is the St. George Ukrainian Catholic Church which holds the Ukrainian Festival every spring.
