I have a white cat with blue eyes; this kind of cat is born deaf. She is very ill-tempered and picky with food. But when I play Bach, she calms down, as if she could sense the peaceful frequency in Bach’s music. I realized that what we call “listening” is often just pure sense of hearing, and true listening does not require hearing although could be enhanced by hearing. When we listen with our whole body, when we give full attention to something or to nothing – that is true listening. Ears help, but listening does not depend on ears alone. For one to truly listen, every cell has to be active.
